Top 3 Historical Places to Visit in New Jersey

If you’re a history buff, New Jersey is the place to be. The state has a large number of historical landmarks, many of which can make the perfect day trip for you and your family. Visiting historical places in the summer is a great way to give your kids some educational stimulation during their break from school, and they can wow their teachers with their first-hand knowledge when they return. Our team at Value Van & Car Rental loves a good road trip, so check out our three favorites along your way.

1. Central Railroad of New Jersey

The Central Railroad of New Jersey was once the gateway to America for many immigrants entering the United States through Ellis Island. The trains out of this station ran throughout New Jersey and its neighboring states, including Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. The train station is now converted into a free museum where you can learn about the station's history and the history of Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, as well as the Hudson River. After you've visited the museum, you can even take a ferry to Ellis Island and dive even deeper into our nation's history.

2. Weehawken Dueling Grounds

Got a Hamilton fan in your group? They'll be sure to appreciate a visit to Weehawken Dueling Grounds to witness for themselves the very spot where Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr held their famous duel. Teach your kids the history of solving disagreements with dueling, and take advantage of the the opportunity to discuss healthier conflict resolution strategies. This historic space is now a park that boasts great views of New York City while you take in all the history around you.

3. Thomas Edison National Historical Park

Finally, visit the former home of America's greatest inventor, Thomas Edison. The house and laboratory are restored to their original condition and available for the public to visit. Get inspired by visiting the very space where motion picture cameras, sound recordings, and silent as well as sound movies were invented!
